Lomaharṣaṇa's son, the sūta Ugraśrava, learned in ancient tales, was present at the twelve-year sacrifice of Kulapati Śaunaka, held in Naimiṣāranya.
लोमहर्षण के पुत्र, सूत उग्रश्रवा, जो प्राचीन कथाओं में विद्वान थे, नैमिषारण्य में आयोजित कुलपति शौनक के बारह वर्षीय यज्ञ में उपस्थित थे।
Having spent a great deal of labour in learning the Pūraṇa-s, he knew them well. He stood before the sages at the sacrifice, and with folded hands, addressed them, 'What do you wish to hear? What shall I tell?
पुराणों को सीखने में बहुत श्रम करने के बाद, वह उन्हें अच्छी तरह से जानता था। वह यज्ञ स्थल पर ऋषियों के सामने खड़े हो गये और हाथ जोड़कर उनसे बोले, 'आप क्या सुनना चाहते हैं? मैं क्या बताऊँ?
The sages replied, "O son of Lomaharṣaṇa! We wish to hear, and you will tell us, those who are eager to listen, some excellent tales. But at the moment, the revered Kulapati Śaunaka is busy in the room with the holy fire.
ऋषियों ने उत्तर दिया, "हे लोमहर्षण के पुत्र! हम सुनना चाहते हैं, और आप हमें सुनाएंगे, जो सुनने के लिए उत्सुक हैं, कुछ उत्कृष्ट कहानियाँ। लेकिन इस समय, श्रद्धेय कुलपति शौनक पवित्र अग्नि के साथ कमरे में व्यस्त हैं।

योऽसौ दिव्याः कथा वेद देवतासुरसंकथाः मनुष्योरगगन्धर्वकथा वेद च सर्वशः
He knows the divine tales about the gods and the demons. He also knows the stories of the men, the nāga-s and the gāndharva-s.
वह देवताओं और राक्षसों के बारे में दिव्य कहानियाँ जानता है। वह मनुष्यों, नागों और गंधर्वों की कहानियाँ भी जानता है।
O Sauti! At this sacrifice, that learned Brāhmaṇa is the chief priest, capable, faithful to his vows and learned in all the sacred texts and the āraṇyaka-s.
हे सौती! इस यज्ञ में, वह विद्वान ब्राह्मण मुख्य पुजारी है, सक्षम है, अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं के प्रति वफादार है और सभी पवित्र ग्रंथों और आरण्यकों में विद्वान है।
He is always truthful, a hermit strict in his austerities and vows, and calm. He is respected by all of us and we must wait for him.
वह सदैव सत्यवादी, अपनी तपस्या और प्रतिज्ञाओं में दृढ़ और शांत रहने वाला साधु है। हम सभी उनका सम्मान करते हैं और हमें उनका इंतजार करना चाहिए।'
When he has taken the honoured seat meant for the preceptor, you will reply to what the best of the Brāhmana-s asks you."
जब वह गुरु के लिए निर्धारित सम्मानित आसन ग्रहण कर लेगा, तो श्रेष्ठतम ब्राह्मण आपसे जो भी पूछेगा, आप उसका उत्तर देंगे।"
Sauti replied: "So it shall be. When that great-souled preceptor has sat down, I shall narrate, as asked by him, all the sacred stories on a wide variety of subjects."
सौती ने उत्तर दिया: "ऐसा ही होगा। जब वह महान आत्मा वाले गुरु बैठ जाएंगे, तो मैं उनके कहे अनुसार, विभिन्न विषयों पर सभी पवित्र कहानियाँ सुनाऊंगा।"
After that, when that bull among Brāhmana-s had finished all actions in accordance with the proper rites and had prayed to the gods and offered water to the ancestors,

Then, when Śaunaka was seated among the officiating priests and assistants, who were seated, Śaunaka said the following.
